Initial Letter
Entering this school year I had no idea what to expect, and I still don’t know what’s to come for the rest of this year and even next year. But what I did know coming into this year it that I want this year to be a year of growth for me. With so much taken away, I have actually gotten opportunities that I wouldn’t have gotten otherwise. But I told myself that I want to be a better person for myself and be able to thrive. My portfolio theme this year is mirrorball, which is inspired by a song from Taylor Swift’s new album. That song is about being compared to a disco ball, and reflecting all of the different personalities around her. A lyric says, “I’ll show you every version of yourself tonight.” When I first heard this song I said “This is about me,” because that’s what I do. I want to see the best in everyone, I want to be the person who brings out the best in everyone. But that doesn’t serve me very well because people take advantage of that. So this year I want to still bring out the best in people who I trust but I also need to give the best version of myself. As a junior in high school now, I don’t have much longer to be a kid because two years left is not a long time. I have so many goals and dreams for my future life out of high school but those can’t happen until I learn about myself firsts. So I need to start figuring things out, now. I want to be successful in everything I do, but as I learned in Core Camp sessions and our Envolve session, success isn’t everything. Yes, of course success is nice but I can’t let that define me anymore because I am never satisfied. I need to start setting small goals for personal growth if I want that to be my main goal for this year. This starts with getting better sleep, meditating, exercising, reading, spending time with my family. All of these things are going to help me become the best version of myself, all while I want to help people be the best version of themselves. I feel like high school is a very pivotal and important step in life where you start figuring out who you want to be and what kind of habits you develop, because these are going to carry you through the rest of your life. Now is the time for me to start creating these habits so I can have the life I dream of and so that my life after high school matches my Pinterest board.

“Life will only change when you become more committed to your dreams than you are to your comfort zone.”
I have big dreams for myself, and there are so many paths that I want to pursue. But these pathways are only going to open up to me if I learn to step outside of my comfort zone. Growing up I’ve been a generally quiet person, not super confident in myself so I’ve chosen to stay comfortable with how I am because I was scared. Within the past few years I’ve become more confident and that just comes with age and believing in myself. So now that I’ve stepped out of my comfort zone a little, more opportunities have opened up for me. It’s crazy that just a little bit of discomfort can change so much for me. This quote is my motivation to commit myself to what I want in life, and that I have to make an effort to reach these dreams because I know they are not going to come easily.
“It is better to end something and start another than to imprison yourself in hoping for the impossible.”
This quote has resonated with me for a while and added impact to my life right now. I’m 16 years old, a junior in high school. In just two years I will be an adult and be moving away from my family to go to college. Recently I’ve been thinking about my life right now, and how I’m never going to get this part of my life back again so I’ve been consciously appreciating everything I have right now. But what I struggle with is the question of,“Do I really appreciate my life right now?” Of course I appreciate my family, friends, and all of my privileges in life but I just have trouble accepting that growing up in this town I haven’t had many experiences in the REAL outside world. What I take from this quote is that once I graduate high school I’m going to be ending this chapter of my life in this small town because I know that staying around here I will feel imprisoned. I’ll feel imprisoned knowing that I won’t have the opportunities here that I would away from home. I am a very nostalgic person so I know that I’ll miss the small town feel and seeing the people I grew up with, but there is so much more of the world that I want to see and experience, outside of this small town.
“There’s nothing better than being able to give myself a break from the striving.”
There have been so many times where I just want to give up because I have felt so overwhelmed with everything in my life. I’m an overachiever and ambitious, which fits perfectly because I’m an enneagram 3. There are some times when I pride myself about being busy all the time, but then I really just burn myself out. That’s something that I struggled with last year, where I just felt burnt out at the beginning of the school year. I think that was mainly because I did not have a break from anything for such a long time. There was a point where I had dance four days a week during the summer and dance is nonstop. Along with that I took college classes during the summer so I never had a break from school. So I just immediately felt burnt out when school started my sophomore year. But now, I’ve had about 7 months of doing very little which I’m not used to. I think quarantine has been a blessing in some ways because I was really able to take a step back and realize how much I did that I didn’t give myself credit for. So the 5ish months where I did almost nothing were very much needed in the fact that I have never had a break for that long since I was very little.

“It’s your determination to take control of your life that drives how fulfilled your life will be.”
I think that this quote represents my time in leadership this year because I feel like I’ve grown a lot this year. I’ve been taking care of myself, and I’ve been learning about what really fulfills me in life. I think that throughout our curriculum we learn to categorize where we put our priorities and what is really going to add something meaningful to our lives. For example, I think that this year I have moved past my phase of trying too hard to be liked by everybody, because I can naturally be liked by people without even trying and those people who like me for my true self, are the most fulfilling people in my life.

Page 4-Goals
- Two leadership goals I have for myself this year is to step up as a leader and be an example for the rest of the class, and to have our prom. As junior class president this year, I feel like now is the time for me to step up and be a leader for the rest of the juniors and the underclassmen. I know that when I was a freshman and sophomore I really looked up to all of the older kids and I wanted to be like them. So now I want to be that person that the underclassmen can look up to because it always helped motivate me to strive to be like the older kids in leadership. My other goal for leadership is to have our prom, which I don’t have a lot of control over. But I am willing to take any precautions and follow any regulations that will allow us to have prom. If we don’t get prom this year the seniors wouldn’t have had a junior or senior prom so I really hope we get to have it this year.
- Two short term goals I have for my life is to be accepted into the Hollywood Connection Teen Company once again next year when I’m a senior and to end this school year with at least a 3.8 non-weighted GPA. Each of these goals can happen within the next 8 months. I was accepted into the HC Teen Company this year and I’m so excited to start training and assisting with them so I hope that my first year traveling with them goes well and hopefully I can be accepted for a second year. This company will prepare me for my life as a dancer in the real world so being able to do it my senior year will prepare me for my life after high school. I also hope to get at least a 3.8 GPA because I know I can do it. Colleges mainly look at your junior year semester grades so I have to work really hard to be able to keep my grades up where I want them. My freshman and sophomore year grades are really good also so I hope that I can keep myself motivated in hopes that I can get into good colleges.
- Two long term goals I have for my life is to become an urban planner and live somewhere on the east coast. Being an urban planner is my dream job because I think what they do is so interesting and I want to be able to impact the world in a way that is actually going to make a difference. Urban planning takes social, economic, and environmental issues and creates a solution to solve these problems for the well being of the communities that it affects. Another goal of mine is to live somewhere on the east coast. I have always wanted to live there because I just feel like they have so much more culture and history rather than the west coast. I will always love California but living anywhere on the east coast for some period of time will truly satisfy me.
Page 5-Goals Part II
- At the beginning of the school year my two goals for leadership was to step up as a leader and to have an RHS prom. I feel that I really did step up as a leader this year because I am an upperclassman and I have the experience and knowledge to be a good leader, even when I doubt myself. Looking back at the year I'm really proud of myself in the way that I've reached out to the younger kids in class and the way I have just stepped out of my comfort zone even more. I don't think this just happened overnight, I think it's a sign of growth because I don't think I've ever been this confident and comfortable in my life ever. My other goal was to have a prom, which did not happen because of COVID but there wasn't anything in my control that could have made it happen.
- The short term goals I had was to be accepted into the HC Teen Co. again and to end the school year with at least a 3.8 GPA. I haven't auditioned for my second year on Teen Co. so I'll have to wait until June to see if I fulfill this goal. But I ended my first semester of junior year with a 4.28 GPA and I think I will probably end my second semester with a 4.1 GPA. These are both exceedingly above the goal I set and I'm proud of what I've done in all my classes this year.
- The long term goals I had for myself was to become an urban planner and to live in a city on the east coast. I think I'm on the right path to becoming an urban planner because of my grades, my connections with the colleges I want to go to, and my interest in the field. After my mock interview I received really great insight about the everyday job of an urban planner and the goals they have to make the world a more cohesive place. I'd also still love to live on the east coast at some point and now I'm even thinking about wanting to live in D.C. because I'd want to work in the federal government being an urban planner.

Naomi Wilbur is the Junior Class President this year at Ripon High. Junior year is one of the most important years of high school, and Naomi is ready to take it on. This is her third year in the leadership program and she’s taking several AP and honors classes. As junior class president, Naomi wants to be a classy example of a leader. She knows that being a good person and leader is what her class needs as an example. Naomi describes her leadership style as being respectable and inclusive. Since this school year is different and she can’t actually execute events like she usually does, she is working on establishing better relations with her peers, as this is a difficult and significant time for many people in her class.
While Naomi is not working on school and leadership she is at her dance studio where she takes classes and works there. Naomi has danced at 5678 Dance Studio for 14 years. She has been on the competition team there for 10 years, and has been working there for 4 years. Her favorite style of dance is pointe and ballet because she feels so confident and elegant while doing it. This year Naomi was accepted into the Hollywood Connection Teen Company where she will travel with the convention around the U.S. and assist their classes. This has been something Naomi has wanted to do for so long, so she is excited to be able to travel with them and create connections with world renowned dancers and choreographers.
Outside of dance, Naomi enjoys listening to music, traveling, and hanging out with her friends and family. Naomi’s favorite artists right now are Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, and Shawn Mendes. She recommends listening to the folklore album and Fine Line. One of her favorite places to travel is Monterey. After high school Naomi wants to attend a four year university and earn her bachelors degree in Urban Affairs. One of her biggest dreams is to be a Radio City Rockette so hopefully she will be able to achieve that one day.

Page 9-Role Model
One of my role models is my dance teacher Tamie Griffith. Tamie is one of the strongest people I know because she has dealt with so much loss in her life, but she has still made it through while being asked to do so much. She started her business at the age of 16 with her sister who was 18 and they have built such a strong community over the past 27 years they’ve been in business. I admire Tamie because she sacrifices so much to put all of her energy into the studio. She’s a wife, mom, and studio director all at the same time and running a studio is very hard. I admire that Tamie is a very fair person. She wants the best for all of her students and wants to give everyone the best opportunities. I am so thankful that I have gotten to grow up at Tamie’s studio because I could not imagine my life without her and the relationships I have made at the studio. One thing about Tamie that stands out to me is when I was about 10 years old she offered to allow me to take extra classes for free, in order to strengthen my technique. She saw my potential and she went out of her job description to give me the best opportunity to better myself. I will always be grateful for this because she did not have to do that for me, but she wanted to give me those extra tools to become successful. She has helped shape me into the person I am today and I owe her so much for that. Tamie has watched me grow up from the age of 2 years old and even at 2 years old she told my mom that I could be a great dancer. I hope she knows how much I and everyone at the studio appreciates her.

Page 10-Inner Animal
I think my inner animal this year is a butterfly because of the way I have grown and transformed since I was a freshman. I remember that my freshman year I chose a mouse as my animal because I was small and timid. Which perfectly describes me at 14 years old because I was so scared of doing or saying something wrong that I just stayed quiet. But over the past two years I have grown as a person; I gained some depth and character because of my experiences. So I like to think that a few years ago I was a caterpillar in it’s cocoon, waiting to emerge as a butterfly. Now I am the butterfly who is ready to be the fullest, most unapologetic version of myself. I now know my worth and what I’m capable of so I’m not afraid to be who I’ve always wanted to be. And this is just what happens when we grow up. We become more comfortable and confident in ourselves that we can see our growth and appreciate the process of experiencing life. I am now the butterfly who is ready to take off and be the best version of myself that I have always wanted to be.

Page 11-Fall Semester Final
1. For my first semester final I chose to do the Giving Tree assignment. But I decided to do another giving tree, rather than the FFA giving tree because it has been difficult to get a tag. But despite those challenges I was glad to be getting a Target gift card for someone who needs it. Target has everything for everyone so it’s a good alternative for a family to be able to use the gift card for essentials, or even gifts. This year has been especially hard for everyone, but I truly cannot imagine how hard it was for people who struggled even before a global pandemic. Every year around the holidays I become even more grateful for what I have because I know that my parents and other family members do all they can to make sure my siblings and I get all that we want. So I am thankful for everything they do, and I’m grateful that I can recognize how lucky I am, and how I can do my part to make this season better for others who don’t have it as easy as I do.
2. To get my final completed I went with my mom to Target to get the gift card. We were out Christmas shopping for our friends and family, so we decided to also get the gift card while we were out. What I noticed about completing this part of my final is that gift cards may be considered the “minimum” for people who are used to getting extravagant gifts. But for someone who is struggling with money, or just life in general a simple gift card could make the world of a difference for them. 3. Every year this project has had an emotional impact on me, just knowing that I’ve had it so easy my whole life. I have never once had to worry about the budget of Christmas presents. I have never had the need to start working to make extra money for my family. There has never been any question about whether I would have food to eat. But every year around this time I realize that not everyone has life as easy as I do. So during this season I am conscious to be thankful for everything, even the smallest things. 4. This assignment was valuable because it makes each of us realize what we have in life, and not to take any of it for granted. Especially this year when we have become so conditioned to things being canceled and taken away from us, it’s so important to appreciate everything we have in the moment because we never know when it will be taken away. During the holiday season it’s even more important that we make an effort to give back; just in appreciation for everything that has led up to this point in our lives. |

Page 12-The Best Things About Me
The best things about me are all of the people in my life who have influenced me into who I am today. I have truly grown as a person because of all the people surrounding me, and I'm so grateful for that. The first row of pictures is of me and all my best friends that I've been so fortunate to grow up with. I love that I have always had, and will always have these people because I love every memory I have with each of them. But I am especially grateful for my best friends Gracie and Laura because although I don't get to see them every day, we have a bond that is unlike any other. We each complement each others personalities so well and I think that's why we make such a dream team at the studio. My family is also one of the best parts about me. I am so close with everyone in my family and I think that we are closer than most families we know. I'm so grateful that my parents instilled the importance of family in my siblings and I because we know we will always have each other, which is something to cherish. The last row of pictures are of sunsets I have seen in the past year. Whenever I see a sunset I am in awe of how pretty the sky is and it allows me to just take a moment to appreciate something as simple as looking up at the sky.
Page 13-What I Like Best About Being a Member of Leadership-Even During a Pandemic
This year being in the leadership program isn’t about planning events, making posters, having dances, or spirit weeks. Like most things this year, we have realized the significance of our connections with those around us, and when that is taken away we are left longing for social interactions again. Back in March of 2020 it was unclear what was going to happen regarding school and especially leadership. After the first few weeks of lockdown I realized that I missed being with my friends and classmates. I didn’t see any of my friends for about 3 months after March 13. It was hard and I knew that I felt better being around the people I used to interact with on a daily basis. After being isolated for so long I knew that I couldn’t be the only person feeling this way and it was imperative that we learn how to interact again, while being safe. So I think my favorite part of being a member of leadership this year was adapting to our new circumstances and creating new ways to save some of our events, while learning to just let some things go. We had to accept the fact that we would probably not be able to have a Homecoming like we usually do, so we created a smaller event-Fall Fest. Of course it wasn’t as immense as our regular Homecoming but it was still a way for us to recognize spirited members of the class and do a small float. Being adaptable has been my favorite part of being in the program this year because I think we will just have to get used to being flexible in every aspect of life.

Page 14-HOCO 2021
One of my favorite parts of our adapted version of Homecoming this year was the coronation ceremony. Personally I think that it was the most well put together and smooth-running coronation. I loved having it on the amphitheater because it just felt very hometown-ey and it really showed how much we need and appreciate our community in their support of our events. I also like the addition of band because it felt like a very classy event. Although it was so different from what we usually do I think it was a great adaptation due to our circumstances.
Page 15-What I Love Doing
A hobby? No, that’s too basic of a description of what I do. Sometimes I feel like I don’t love dance because it’s just so consuming of my whole life but I couldn’t imagine my life without it. I’ve been dancing since I was 2 years old and I think I’ve gotten far in my studio career before a real professional career. I’ve always debated about what my favorite part of dance is and I think it’s seeing my own growth. Throughout my 15 years of dancing I’ve obviously grown up but even within the past few years I have seen my growth and it’s just rewarding to know that my hard work is paying off and other people notice it too. In the judges comments from my solo they talked about how much they’ve enjoyed seeing me grow and taking their corrections to benefit myself. So it’s a rewarding feeling knowing that I can see my progress over the course of my life. I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve gained through dance and the connections I’ve made. I’ve been able to do countless auditions for scholarships and gotten to perform for some of the best choreographers in the industry today. I’ve built relationships with said choreographers that could be useful to me in the future if I choose to go professional with my dance career. But one of the most significant reasons I’m so grateful for dance is because of the friendships I’ve made over the past 15 years. It’s not very often that people get to say that they’ve gotten to do their sport with their friends from the time they were 2 to 18 years old. My best friends are the ones I have met through dance and it’s unfathomable to me that I wouldn’t have known them if we weren’t brought together through our sport.

To my successor, Makenzie, I want to wish you luck in your junior year and serving as junior class president. The upcoming year is very uncertain right now and I know you’re stressed about the components of what the year holds. But, you have the experience and knowledge to have a successful year. My advice for you is to ask for help, you don’t have to do everything on your own and I urge you to reach out to your officers because I know they are so willing to help with whatever you need. Since we don’t know how the year will look I think the biggest thing I want for you to do is to reach out to the general population of your class for help. Whether that’s during events or needing help fundraising, they truly are helpful in creating a better class culture and they will be supportive if you give them the right incentive. But this isn’t just advice for your position as junior class president, it’s something that you can carry with you forever: knowing that you can ask for help and people will be more than willing to do what they can to give you the best outcome. I know you will do a great job as junior class president because you have the experience and I will always be here to help, too.
Page 18-Do's and Don'ts
-Do: have at least 2 back up plans in case of events not happening
-Do: think about how to make every event accessible to every student
-Do: start on journals early and don’t turn them in every day at 1:29 lol
-Do: utilize class Instagram because they are useful to reach out to
-Do: take advantage of Morty’s breathing techniques
-Don’t: procrastinate (even though I do it anyway)
-Don’t: disregard the writing prompts and think deeply about your answer
-Don’t: overwork yourself
-Don’t: order class shirts in bulk because they may not all sell

Page 19-The Professional
This year I feel that one of the most important parts of the professional development we went through was the resume that was used in our mock interviews. This year I was interviewed by an urban planner in Oakland and this job is really something that I’m looking into and am really wanting to pursue. It was so helpful to have insight from a professional in the field I want to go into because she gave me some great advice and critiques that I will fix on my resume in order to have the best effect on any professional. Another professional aspect that was beneficial was being mindful, especially this year. I’ve always heard about being mindful and that it’s beneficial for your body and mind, but this year I’ve really looked into it more and tried to implement it in my life. This past year hasn’t been easy for anyone but recognizing that we need help and rest is an important step to living a better life.
Page 20-Change
This year as a leader was hard, when I couldn’t be out in front of people leading. I was hoping that this year would give me an opportunity to come out of my shell even more now that I’m an upperclassman. Over the past few years I’ve become more confident in myself and my leadership abilities, due to growing up and experiencing life. Especially within the past year I have grown so much as a person due to the pandemic and all of the challenges that have come with it. But I think that the most significant thing I’d like to change as a leader would be becoming a better mentor. This year it wasn’t my role to step in and try to teach the underclassmen how to do things, but as an experienced member in the class I was still able to help out when needed. Especially in the upcoming school year I am going to have to be as available as ever because of the disconnect the new students in leadership have from what we really do as a program. As ASB President next year I am going to have to be the head of the class, the person with the most knowledge, the one that everyone is supposed to rely on. It’s a lot of pressure but I know that I’ll be able to be a good resource for the freshmen and the rest of the class. I know I need to change the way that I have a certain mindset about planning events and how it affects the student body. I need to be more intentional about what we choose to do as a program because every action has it’s equal opposite reaction. It’s important to recognize that there are things that I have to change in order to be the most effective leader I can be.
